Problem We Helped Solve

As Canberra becomes increasingly electrified, demand for electricity continues to rise. The winter of 2025 brought unprecedented peak energy demand, leaving parts of the network vulnerable to overload. Without a fixed solution in place in time to manage these seasonal peaks, residents faced the risk of power interruptions and reduced reliability. A reliable, safe and cost-effective temporary solution was required.

What Needed to be Powered

Temporary support for the local electricity network, stabilising supply to the community during periods of high load.

Alternatives Assessed

Diesel generators have traditionally been used for temporary network support, but Evoenergy was looking for a better alternative due to their significant noise, emissions, high operational costs and lack of reliability.

  • Deployed six grid-certified POWRBANK MAX battery units at strategic nodes on the LV side of padmount transformers to support peak load and balance fluctuations across the network.
  • Programmed each battery according to demand curves, with live adjustments possible at any time through remote monitoring and control mechanisms, alongside integration with Evoenergy’s SCADA control system.
  • Successfully delivered Australia’s first deployment of large-scale mobile batteries on the electricity network in a temporary capacity

POWRBANK MAX units are a large-scale mobile battery system designed for high-powered and long-duration commercial, industrial and grid applications

Over a four-month period, the mobile batteries maintained reliable electricity supply to households in parts of Canberra —preventing outages even as Evoenergy recorded its highest-ever system peak on record. This project marked Australia’s first deployment of large-scale mobile batteries on an electricity network, setting a benchmark for innovative, reliable, low-emission and low-noise grid support.

No Outages

Powershift helped keep the lights on to the community during Canberra’s highest winter peak ever on record.

Reduced Noise

Quieter than diesel generators, reducing noise pollution and disruption to residents.

Lower Operational Costs

Significantly more cost effective solution than diesel generators and fuel.

This deployment not only validated the capability of mobile BESS for network support but also demonstrated its scalability for similar challenges across the wider Australian electricity network.
