SNAPSHOT: ACT’s grid operator, Evoenergy, approached Powershift to assist with temporary network support to improve electricity reliability during a high-demand winter period, while awaiting permanent network upgrades. To maintain network stability and prevent outages, six POWRBANK MAX units were deployed to provide critical temporary support and keep safe, reliable power flowing to the community.

THE BRIEF
Problem We Helped Solve
As Canberra becomes increasingly electrified, demand for electricity continues to rise. The winter of 2025 brought unprecedented peak energy demand, leaving parts of the network vulnerable to overload. Without a fixed solution in place in time to manage these seasonal peaks, residents faced the risk of power interruptions and reduced reliability. A reliable, safe and cost-effective temporary solution was required.
What Needed to be Powered
Temporary support for the local electricity network, stabilising supply to the community during periods of high load.
Alternatives Assessed
Diesel generators have traditionally been used for temporary network support, but Evoenergy was looking for a better alternative due to their significant noise, emissions, high operational costs and lack of reliability.
THE POWERSHIFT SOLUTION
POWRBANK MAX units are a large-scale mobile battery system designed for high-powered and long-duration commercial, industrial and grid applications
THE HIGHLIGHTS
Over a four-month period, the mobile batteries maintained reliable electricity supply to households in parts of Canberra —preventing outages even as Evoenergy recorded its highest-ever system peak on record. This project marked Australia’s first deployment of large-scale mobile batteries on an electricity network, setting a benchmark for innovative, reliable, low-emission and low-noise grid support.
No Outages
Powershift helped keep the lights on to the community during Canberra’s highest winter peak ever on record.
Reduced Noise
Quieter than diesel generators, reducing noise pollution and disruption to residents.
Lower Operational Costs
Significantly more cost effective solution than diesel generators and fuel.
This deployment not only validated the capability of mobile BESS for network support but also demonstrated its scalability for similar challenges across the wider Australian electricity network.
“At Evoenergy, innovation means finding smarter, more efficient ways to meet the evolving needs of our customers and community. This project shows how we can respond to growth not just by building more infrastructure, but by exploring practical alternatives that deliver real value: faster, cleaner, and more cost-effectively.“
