Problem We Helped Solve

Renovations on a 19-storey Melbourne CBD hotel were taking place, with major grid constraints to finish the job due to delays to permanent power from the grid operator. The first challenge was commissioning the building lifts, which required an innovative solution to handle their regenerative power – diesel generators can’t support this, but Powershift batteries with regenerative power capabilities are built for this mission.

As the project progressed and grid delays extended further, the customer required a second solution to power the final stages of the fit-out and commissioning of all building services. With the entire site restricted to a combined TBS supply of only 60A, maintaining progress without additional delays became a significant challenge.

What Needed to be Powered

Stage One required building lifts with regenerative power to be commissioned. Stage Two required commissioning of the remainder of the hotel building, including everything from hallway lighting to pumps and other essential services.

Alternatives Assessed

Most generators were unable to commission the lifts due to their inability to store or manage regenerative power produced during lift operations. The only alternative would have been to wait for the permanent mains connection, which would have significantly delayed the renovations (by months).

  • Powershift supplied an LX60/125 Battery at the start of the contract to power the two building lifts using only a 10A supply, with the ability to handle regenerative power from the lifts.
  • When the customer faced further delays, Powershift deployed a second BESS, a larger Entertainer unit, to commission the remainder of the site using just a 50A TBS charge.
  • This staged, dual-BESS solution enabled the project to stay on schedule despite tight power constraints.

Our Entertainer and LX Series units, working together across a site, are great examples of how Powershift can deliver reliable, tailored power for any site.

Although the customer experienced significant delays to their permanent power connection, the installation of the two Powershift BESS units ensured the project could continue operating and be completed on time – using only a 60A total supply.

No Delays

Provided reliable power for critical equipment and services, keeping the project on schedule.

Compact Solution

With limited space on site, the compact size of Powershift BESS units allowed easy installation, including one in the basement.

Eliminated Noise and Emissions

Removed the need for diesel generators, eliminating noise, fumes, and associated disruption.

Adaptable, Staged Solutions

Powershift tailored and adapted the battery setups to suit the client’s changing needs throughout the project.

Reduced Cost

Although a second battery was required this solution was still cheaper than hiring and fuelling generators.
