Powering peak loads with a small temp building supply
Powershift delivered a compact temporary power solution for a space-constrained construction site in the heart of Adelaide that didn’t have enough TBS to run peak loads throughout the project.
The challenge
Load 28 and Hindmarsh needed an innovative way to overcome the problem of insufficient temp building supply to power all of their peak loads across their construction program, with the added challenge of space constraints. With limited space on site and the project located in a dense, built-up area, traditional diesel generators weren’t a suitable option. Gensets also posed other challenges including noise, having to exhaust fumes away from the site and worrying about productivity losses from refuelling delays and time offline due to maintenance. They required a compact, reliable, and low-impact temp power solution that could support their construction needs without disrupting the site or surrounding environment.
What needed to be powered
- 20T Zoomlion Tower crane
- 2 × 650 Alimak Twin hoists
- Tower boom
The alternative
Multiple diesel generators would have been required, at least 2 × 350kVA generators.
The solution
- Deployed one Powershift CP300 unit, trickle charging from just 32A of the TBS and powering the crane, concrete pump and hoists. This allowed the remaining TBS to cover general site building power.
- Delivered a compact footprint battery solution suitable for space-restricted sites, while still capable of supporting large peak loads.
- Allowed the customer to ‘set and forget’, with the Powershift team remotely monitoring the battery and providing support as needed, backed by real-time data and insights.
CP300 units are no longer available and have been superseded by the next-generation eGEN series.

Powershift have done a fantastic job delivering the CP300 battery. This is the first time we’ve used a battery solution in South Australia, and the size, low noise, and reduced emissions were key reasons for choosing it. The environmental benefits—particularly the savings on fuel and emissions—have been outstanding. As this is a Green Star project, it’s a great innovation to be able to use. Best of all, it’s been a true ‘set and forget’ solution.
We spent a lot of time working through the setup, and the tech team were really good to deal with. The fact that the battery is running at less than 50% of its capacity gives us plenty of confidence that we can fully cycle the crane without worrying about running out of power. From a site perspective, we’re really happy knowing there won’t be any power issues.
The highlights
- Rich, Real-Time DataThe system provides detailed performance data and remote monitoring, giving the client complete visibility of power usage, load behaviour, and overall system health.
- Reduced CostsThe battery solution significantly reduced operational expenses by eliminating diesel usage, fuel deliveries, and ongoing generator maintenance.
- Compact, Safe SolutionThe compact unit fits easily into tight areas and features a fully enclosed fire-suppression system, ensuring safe operation and peace of mind—even in basement installations.
- Reduced Noise LevelsOperating with minimal noise, the battery ensured a quieter work environment—ideal for dense construction sites or residential-adjacent projects.
- No On-Site Diesel Storage RequiredRemoving the need for diesel tanks improved safety, freed up space, and eliminated compliance requirements associated with hazardous fuel storage.
