Delivering big peak power from a compact footprint
Powershift deployed a BESS unit to power a 160A tower crane from just a 16A input, eliminating the need for a large generator that would otherwise idle for most of the day, and delivering a quieter, cheaper, more compact solution for McNab's Kedron site.
The challenge
McNab needed a reliable power solution to run a 160A tower crane on a grid-constrained site with not enough mains supply, where space, noise and cost were key considerations. With total site demand of over 220A but only 80A of mains supply available, McNab needed a simple way to power the crane and run site power and amenities without exceeding that limited grid connection.

The alternative
The alternative assessed was a 220kVA genset.
The solution
- Powershift deployed 1 x P150 BESS, drawing on just a 16A input to power the site’s 160A tower crane.
- This split the site’s constrained 80A mains supply so that 63A powered site power and amenities directly, while the crane’s 160A peak demand was met from just 16A into the BESS.
- The compact footprint of the unit suited the constraints of the Kedron site, without compromising on power delivery.
- The system was backed by 24/7 monitoring to ensure all crane lifts were met reliably, giving McNab confidence in continuous performance throughout the build.
