Downer New Zealand advanced its sustainability goals by transitioning from continuous diesel generation to a cleaner, high-efficiency hybrid battery-solar power system provided by Powershift for its off-grid site offices on a weighbridge construction project.

The challenge

With a strong commitment to sustainability, Downer wanted a cleaner solution than relying on 24/7 diesel generators to power their off-grid site offices through construction of a weighbridge in Auckland, New Zealand. With generators producing significant CO2 emissions, noise pollution and requiring ongoing refuelling and servicing, Downer was seeking a smarter approach that could also help them meet their ESG goals.

What needed to be powered

  • Multiple site offices and general site power, with the requirement for the most sustainable hybrid option to support Downer’s sustainability goals.

The alternative

The only other alternative for this site was a diesel generator running 24/7, which would also not enable Downer to leverage available solar.

The solution

  • Delivered a hybrid off-grid system combining Powershift’s LX60/125 battery with 5kWp of solar integrated into the site sheds, with a 30kVA generator for top-up on low solar days.
  • Leveraging a Powershift battery allowed for the in-built solar on Downer’s site sheds to be captured, maximising renewable generation, with the battery storing solar energy and powering the site. The small generator operated only for short intervals when solar input was insufficient.
  • Powershift remotely monitored and supported the unit 24/7 and partnered with a local NZ delivery partner to ensure any on-site support needed was quick and to the highest standard.
