Three generators replaced with a single compact BESS

Powershift deployed a single compact BESS unit, replacing what would otherwise have required three separate generators, to power two tower cranes, two hoists, a tower boom, and site amenities on Decode's space-constrained Cronulla site.

The challenge

Decode needed a reliable power solution to run a large demand from a very small grid supply and on a very tight site.

The requirements was to power over 700A of equipment – two tower cranes, two hoists, a tower boom and site general power – from only a 63A supply. With almost no space on site, the BESS unit also needed to be placed in the basement. Power availability on site also changed as the project progressed, at times dropping below the standard 63A TBS supply, so Powershift worked closely with the Decode team to monitor loads in real time and ensure the site never lost power.

  • Hoist 1 – 100A
  • Hoist 2 – 100A
  • Tower boom – 63A
  • Site general/amenities power – 80A
  • Peak/max demand total – ~703A

The alternative

The alternative assessed was a genset-only approach comprising 300kVA, 200kVA and 60kVA generators.

The solution

  • Powershift deployed 1 x P300 BESS unit, powering a DB feeding two tower cranes, two hoists, a tower boom and site general power from a 63A TBS input: a single unit, replacing what would otherwise have required three separate generators.
  • The compact, fume-free unit made it a safer option for placement in the site’s basement, removing the risks associated with running a diesel generator in an enclosed space.
  • The system was configured with the flexibility to accommodate additional loads as the project progressed. As power availability on site changed, Powershift worked closely with the Decode site team to reassess the BESS configuration, monitor loads in real time and ensure the site never lost power.
