Overcoming grid constraints with multiple staged battery solutions
A 19-storey hotel in Melbourne’s CBD faced significant delays to construction and final handover due to delays with permanent grid power. To keep the final stages of construction moving and allow all areas of the hotel to be commissioned on time, Powershift supplied two different batteries, staging these as and when required by the customer.
The challenge
Renovations on a 19-storey Melbourne CBD hotel were taking place, with major grid constraints to finish the job due to delays to permanent power from the grid operator. The first challenge was commissioning the building lifts, which required an innovative solution to handle their regenerative power – diesel generators can’t support this, but Powershift batteries with regenerative power capabilities are built for this mission.
As the project progressed and grid delays extended further, the customer required a second solution to power the final stages of the fit-out and commissioning of all building services. With the entire site restricted to a combined TBS supply of only 60A, maintaining progress without additional delays became a significant challenge.
What needed to be powered
- Stage one was commissioning the building lifts, which meant handling their regenerative power. Diesel generators can’t store or manage it — Powershift batteries are built for this mission.
- Stage two came as the grid delays dragged on: power for the final fit-out and commissioning of every building service, from hallway lighting to pumps — with the whole site restricted to a combined TBS supply of only 60A.
The alternative
The only alternative was to wait for the mains connection, delaying the renovations by months.
The solution
- Powershift supplied an LX60/125 battery at the start of the contract to power the two building lifts using only a 10A supply, with the ability to handle regenerative power from the lifts.
- When the customer faced further delays, Powershift deployed a second BESS, a larger Enertainer unit, to commission the remainder of the site using just a 50A TBS charge.
- This staged, dual-BESS solution enabled the project to stay on schedule despite tight power constraints.

The highlights
- No DelaysProvided reliable power for critical equipment and services, keeping the project on schedule.
- Compact SolutionWith limited space on site, the compact size of Powershift BESS units allowed easy installation, including one in the basement.
- Eliminated Noise and EmissionsRemoved the need for diesel generators, eliminating noise, fumes, and associated disruption.
- Adaptable, Staged SolutionsPowershift tailored and adapted the battery setups to suit the client’s changing needs throughout the project.
- Reduced CostAlthough a second battery was required this solution was still cheaper than hiring and fuelling generators.
