Pioneering grid management solutions on the Australian electricity network
ACT’s grid operator, Evoenergy, approached Powershift to assist with temporary network support to improve electricity reliability during a high-demand winter period, while awaiting permanent network upgrades. To maintain network stability and prevent outages, six POWRBANK MAX units were deployed to provide critical temporary support and keep safe, reliable power flowing to the community.
The challenge
As Canberra becomes increasingly electrified, demand for electricity keeps rising. The winter of 2025 brought unprecedented peak energy demand, leaving parts of the network vulnerable to overload.
Without a fixed solution in place in time for these seasonal peaks, residents faced the risk of power interruptions. Evoenergy needed temporary support for the local network, stabilising supply to the community through periods of high seasonal load.
What needed to be powered
- Temporary support for the local electricity network, stabilising supply to the community during periods of high seasonal loads.
The alternative
Diesel generators have traditionally been used for temporary network support, but Evoenergy was looking for a better alternative due to their significant noise, emissions, high operational costs and lack of reliability.
The solution
- Deployed six grid-certified POWRBANK MAX battery units at strategic nodes on the LV side of padmount transformers to support peak load and balance fluctuations across the network.
- Programmed each battery according to demand curves, with live adjustments possible at any time through remote monitoring and control mechanisms, alongside integration with Evoenergy’s SCADA control system.
- Successfully delivered Australia’s first deployment of large-scale mobile batteries on the electricity network in a temporary capacity.
- This deployment not only validated the capability of mobile BESS for network support but also demonstrated its scalability for similar challenges across the wider Australian electricity network.

At Evoenergy, innovation means finding smarter, more efficient ways to meet the evolving needs of our customers and community. This project shows how we can respond to growth not just by building more infrastructure, but by exploring practical alternatives that deliver real value: faster, cleaner, and more cost-effectively.
The highlights
- No OutagesPowershift helped keep the lights on to the community during Canberra's highest winter peak ever on record.
- Reduced NoiseQuieter than diesel generators, reducing noise pollution and disruption to residents.
- Lower Operational CostsSignificantly more cost effective solution than diesel generators and fuel.
